Chapter Seven

The message arrived from one of his zombies that late morning. There’d been an accident up in a community south of where Seattle was. The name of the community was Lakewood, as it was right next to the old town of Lakewood. There was a healthy town center, and almost ten thousand people up there.

From what he was told, it looked like some bored kids had been playing at a construction site and climbing the unfinished two-story building. One of them had slipped and fallen, shattering his collar bone and possibly breaking his neck. He’d given instructions not to let anyone move the kid before they arrived, since moving anyone with a broken neck could kill them easily. He’d also been told their local doctor suspected two people had cancer, so they’d probably check that out as well instead of waiting for their official visit. It’d be one of the last places they went to after all.

He found Cassie and Mara giggling together over something as he walked into the room. Kim and Lin were already changing into their leathers, they’d both been sunbathing.

“We’ve got an emergency in Lakewood,” he said, and went on to explain what he knew.

They both jumped up and he went to snag the medallion while they changed quickly upstairs. By the time they both came down Kim and Lin were ready as well, and he handed over the medallion.

When they appeared in town, he had to get his bearings. It was his first time to Lakewood in a while and there were a lot of new buildings and stores. It had all the same stuff as the other towns, just in different places, from the tavern and whorehouse, to the tanners and tailors. They also had what looked like another playhouse or music hall, and an art and music store. Mara had been right. The communities all had survival in this new harsher world down, and they were all branching out hungrily for art and entertainment.

He felt where the two zombies were guarding the downed kid, and they headed in that direction. The skeleton of the new building came into view about the same time his power got in range of his zombies, instead of the life link he shared to all of them. At the same time that he felt the lifeforce in his two zombies, he also felt something that made his steps falter and he stopped for a second.

Cassie asked, “What is it?”

He said, “A very powerful sorceress is there already. And… something else.”

Mara asked, “Something else?”

He nodded, “Something that makes the sorceress’s huge life aura look positively anemic. For reference, the sorceress is just a little stronger than you Cassie, but I never met anyone as powerful as you before.”

It was true enough, Diane and the others weren’t weak at all, but they’d not been nearly as powerful as Cassie.

He took a quick look through his zombie’s eyes, and he frowned at the beautiful shimmering silver hair that looked like a liquid silver waterfall running down her body.
